Charlotte FC v New York City FC: Westwood wants balance in bid to snap winless run
Charlotte FC are looking to end their winless run when they face New York City FC in an Eastern Conference clash in MLS this weekend.
Charlotte FC midfielder Ashley Westwood believes the team must find the right balance between attack and defence to end their winless run.
Charlotte have failed to win any of their last four games since a victory over Toronto on May 31, losing three games and drawing one.
Despite their poor run of form, Charlotte have still managed to score six goals in their last four matches and have found the net in each of their last 11 MLS games.
Westwood insisted they are not overly worried about their recent results, but acknowledged they do need to rediscover their winning touch soon.
“Yeah, and that was the argument last year. We were not scoring many goals but we were tight at the back, now we have gone the other way. So it is about finding that balance,” said Westwood.
“It’s been a tough run. We have been away from home, it has not been easy. The MLS is known for being tough on the road and we have certainly found that out.
“But I think we have been in games. There have not been many teams that have outplayed us. They have been more our own doing, which stings but we can put right.
“We are not beating ourselves up, we know we have been in the majority of games. It has just been lacks of concentration that has cost us.”
Next up for Charlotte is a home match against Eastern Conference rivals New York City FC.
NYCFC won their last game 3-1 against Toronto to move them up to seventh in the East.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Charlotte FC – Pep Biel
Pep Biel has been Charlotte’s leading light this season, scoring seven times and registering nine assists in MLS.
The Spaniard has scored in each of his last two matches, while also providing an assist last time out against Orlando City.
New York City FC – Hannes Wolf
Wolf is NYCFC’s leading scorer this season with nine goals and he has also contributed with three assists.
Six of those goals have come in his last five matches, so if Charlotte are to snap their wait for a win, they will need to have a careful eye on NYCFC's star man.
MATCH PREDICTION – DRAW
Hosts Charlotte have secured 19 points from a possible 27 on offer in nine MLS contests at Bank of America Stadium this season.
In league matches on the road this season, NYCFC have one win, four draws, and four losses. They are on a three-match away winless streak.
Charlotte have only won one of their last six league outings, whereas NYCFC have won three, drawn one and lost two in that time.
When the two sides last met in MLS, NYCFC won 2-1 at Yankee Stadium in 2024.
Charlotte have had the edge generally, though, in recent seasons, beating NYCFC in four of their last six encounters.
