Carlos Vela Retires and Griezmann Bids him Farewell Without Getting The Chance to Play With him Again
After nearly two decades of playing professionally, Carlos Vela has officially announced his retirement from football. At 36 years old and after six months of inactivity, the Mexican idol has decided to bring his career to a close. However, he will remain linked to LAFC, where he will be honored as the club’s first-ever ambassador.
The announcement came through an emotional message on social media, where Vela thanked his family, the clubs he played for, and the fans: “I’ve lived some very special moments, but the time has come to say goodbye to professional football. Thank you all for your support and love.” His farewell will be made official on September 21 in the match against Real Salt Lake, during the event dubbed “Carlos Vela Night.”
Griezmann says goodbye, never getting to play with him again
One of the most heartfelt reactions came from Antoine Griezmann, Vela’s former teammate at Real Sociedad, who had always hoped to reunite with the Mexican on the pitch. Unfortunately, that dream will now go unfulfilled.
The French striker, currently playing for Atlético de Madrid, dedicated a touching message to his friend: “Love you, my Carlitos! Thank you for your friendship.” Griezmann and Vela shared a locker room in San Sebastián from 2011 to 2014, forming a strong bond both on and off the field. Since then, the Frenchman has openly expressed admiration for Vela’s talent and his desire to play together again—something Vela’s retirement has now made impossible.
A lasting legacy with LAFC and MLS
Carlos Vela was Los Angeles FC’s first star signing, joining the team in 2017 from Real Sociedad. He quickly became the face of the franchise, setting records like the most goals in a single MLS regular season (34 in 2019) and leading the club to several trophies, including the MLS Cup, two Supporters’ Shields, and the recent US Open Cup.
Beyond the titles, his influence shaped the club’s identity and earned the adoration of fans who embraced him as a legend. Though his final months were marked by injuries and limited playing time, his impact was undeniable both on and off the pitch.
In Europe, Vela made his mark with clubs like Arsenal, Osasuna, West Bromwich, and most notably Real Sociedad, where he enjoyed his best footballing years. With the Mexican national team, he played in two World Cups (2010 and 2018) and won two Gold Cups, along with a U-17 World Cup title in 2005.
Carlos Vela retires leaving behind a legacy of skill, charisma, and unforgettable moments—and a friendship with Griezmann that will live on beyond the game.
