Which Teams Have Won the Most Ligue 1 Titles?
Paris Saint-Germain has opened a historic gap at the top, but Saint-Étienne, Olympique de Marseille, AS Monaco and other French giants remain prominent in the Ligue 1 record books
French soccer has produced 19 different league champions since the professional championship began in 1932/33, but the historical ranking is increasingly dominated by Paris Saint-Germain. After another title in 2025/26, PSG moved further clear at the top and reshaped a list once led for decades by Saint-Étienne.
PSG: the new standard with 14 titles
Paris Saint-Germain is now the most successful club in Ligue 1 history with 14 championships. The latest came in 2025/26, when Luis Enrique’s team secured a fifth consecutive title by beating RC Lens 2-0 with one match still to play.
The speed of PSG’s rise is remarkable. The club did not win its first French championship until 1986, but 12 of its 14 titles have arrived since 2012/13. That modern dominance allowed Paris to overtake Saint-Étienne and establish a four-title advantage at the top of the historical table.
Saint-Étienne remains second
AS Saint-Étienne sits second with 10 championships. The Greens became the first French club to reach double figures, building their legacy primarily during the 1960s and 1970s.
Eight of their titles arrived between 1964 and 1976, before their 10th and most recent championship in 1981. No club could surpass that total for more than four decades, making Saint-Étienne one of the defining teams in the history of French soccer even as PSG has moved ahead.
Marseille leads the chasing group
Olympique de Marseille is third with nine league titles. OM’s championships span several eras, beginning in 1937 and including a particularly successful period around the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Just behind Marseille are AS Monaco and FC Nantes, tied with eight titles each. Monaco’s most recent championship came in 2017, when a young team featuring Kylian Mbappé ended PSG’s run at the top. Nantes, meanwhile, won eight championships between 1965 and 2001.
Lyon’s historic seven-title streak
Olympique Lyonnais ranks next with seven championships, all earned in one extraordinary period. Lyon won seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles from 2002 through 2008, still the longest championship streak in the history of the competition.
Stade de Reims and Girondins de Bordeaux follow with six titles apiece. Reims was one of France’s dominant teams during the 1950s and early 1960s, while Bordeaux’s most recent crown came in 2009.
A historical ranking transformed by PSG
The hierarchy shows how dramatically French soccer has changed. Saint-Étienne, Marseille, Nantes and Reims built much of the championship’s history, while Lyon controlled the early 2000s.
Today, however, PSG stands alone. With 14 championships and five straight titles through 2025/26, the Paris club has turned what was once a tightly contested historical ranking into a clear lead.
