PSG and Le Havre: A Century Apart

This Friday, Le Havre hosts PSG at the Stade Océane.

Founded in 1872, Le Havre is considered the oldest club in French professional football, while PSG, founded in 1970, is one of the youngest in Ligue 1. The youngest is Clermont Foot, founded in 1990 and now competing in Ligue 2.

Who Is France's Oldest Football Club?

There is no historic rivalry between the two clubs beyond their founding dates.

Many Parisians consider the Standard Athletic Club of Paris, founded by British residents in the capital in 1890, to be France's oldest football club. However, the Normandy club insists it holds that distinction and claims to have been the first French club outside Paris to win the league.

PSG Looks to Stay on Top as Le Havre Battles at the Bottom

This Friday, neither team will be playing for a title.

PSG is looking to maintain its position at the top of the league, while Le Havre sits at the bottom of the standings and needs a victory against the UEFA Champions League champions to end a run of four consecutive defeats.

The odds are against the Normandy side, but anything is possible in Ligue 1.

A victory in the port city could lift Le Havre from the bottom of the Océan and shake up the top of the standings, with five other teams having a chance to claim first place.
