Paul Pogba’s Future at Monaco Hanging by a Thread
What looked like a fresh start in the Principality is starting to unravel. The future of a global star is once again under scrutiny.
A Comeback That Never Took Off
Paul Pogba’s return to top-level football has fallen well short of expectations. Despite being under contract until June 2027, AS Monaco are now seriously evaluating the possibility of parting ways with the French midfielder due to his minimal sporting impact.
Since being cleared to play after serving his doping suspension, the 2018 World Cup winner has managed just 30 official minutes, a figure that has raised concerns within both the coaching staff and club management.
Early Optimism and Words of Hope
When he signed for the club, Pogba spoke with emotion and conviction, viewing the move as a genuine chance to revive his career in Ligue 1.
“I feel very fortunate and happy to be playing football again. It’s an honour to wear this shirt. Monaco is a historic club, and it’s a privilege to be part of it,” the midfielder said at his unveiling.
Reflecting on his difficult journey, he also added:
“There are moments when the devil tells you it’s over, but football is not finished for me.”

Physical Issues Take Centre Stage
The reality has been far more complicated. After nearly two years away from competitive football, Pogba has struggled to regain the physical rhythm required at elite level. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, a series of recurring fitness issues have prevented him from training consistently.
His last appearance came almost two months ago, in a league match against Brest, and he has not been available since.
Monaco Reassess the Project
Initially, AS Monaco showed full confidence in the player, offering a two-year deal and designing a tailored physical programme to ease his return. However, the lack of progress has forced the club to consider a drastic option: early contract termination.
From the club’s perspective, sustaining a sporting project around a player who cannot stay fit or contribute on the pitch has become increasingly difficult to justify.
A Mental Blow and an Uncertain Road Ahead
The situation has also taken a personal toll. Pogba was hoping to build continuity and even harboured ambitions of returning to the France national team. Instead, his future is once again clouded by uncertainty.
It is worth recalling that the midfielder tested positive for testosterone in August 2023 following a match against Udinese. Initially banned for four years, he successfully appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, reducing the suspension until March 2025. That extended absence now appears to be weighing heavily on his body.
A Story at Risk of Ending Early
What began as a redemption arc is in danger of becoming another frustrating chapter in Paul Pogba’s career. With just 30 minutes played and ongoing physical setbacks, AS Monaco are now considering bringing an early end to a gamble that has yet to pay off.
Once again, the future of one of his generation’s most gifted midfielders remains up in the air — and this time, an exit feels closer than a revival.
