Another Blow for Paul Pogba: He Suffers a Sprain and Delays His Debut With Monaco Once Again
A new injury delays Paul Pogba’s debut with AS Monaco. The midfielder suffered a grade-two sprain, pushing his return to action until after the international break.
Pocognoli confirms grade-two sprain
The wait for Paul Pogba’s debut with AS Monaco has been extended yet again. The 32-year-old French midfielder suffered a grade-two ankle sprain during training, just 24 hours before he was expected to be called up for Monaco’s Ligue 1 clash against Paris FC.
Monaco head coach Sebastien Pocognoli provided the first official update during a press conference: "He has a grade-two sprain. That’s all I can say for now. We will run another evaluation next week. It’s a medium-intensity sprain," he said, emphasizing uncertainty regarding Pogba’s return. This setback adds to the minor physical issues Pogba has faced since beginning his individual conditioning program with the club.
No set return date
Pocognoli refused to set a concrete timeline for the return of the former Manchester United and Juventus star, leaving the decision in the hands of medical staff. "His availability could vary between a few days or up to one or two weeks. We’ll know more next week. We’ll see," he explained.
This uncertainty is frustrating for both player and club. Pogba was expected to potentially return against Stade Rennais on November 22 or even versus RC Lens, but both scenarios are now doubtful following this new injury blow.
Patience after 26 months without action
The French midfielder has not played a competitive match since September 2023 while at Juventus, before serving a doping suspension later reduced to 18 months. After completing his ban, Pogba signed a two-year contract with Monaco in June 2025, hoping to revive his career and earn a place back in the French national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Over the last three months, Pogba has followed a rigorous individual fitness program to rebuild strength and rhythm. However, the ankle injury once again delays his emotional comeback, heavily anticipated since his arrival, where he was seen visibly emotional while signing with Monaco.
Uncertain future, cautious optimism
Pogba addressed the setback on his social media accounts, writing: "Patience, God’s plan arrives at the right moment." Monaco has remained firm in its approach not to rush the midfielder, aiming to avoid further setbacks.
For now, Pogba will miss the Champions League clash against Bodø/Glimt and the next Ligue 1 match against RC Lens. The most optimistic target for his debut is now the November 22 matchup against Stade Rennais. Meanwhile, Pocognoli will rely on Mohamed Camara and Eliot Matazo to maintain midfield balance in the absence of the team's blockbuster summer signing.
