Mason Greenwood could leave Marseille for a Champions League move
Despite enjoying an outstanding spell in France’s Ligue 1, the English striker has attracted interest from several clubs, with one offer potentially giving him the chance to compete in Europe’s top club competition.
English forward Mason Greenwood has revived his career since arriving in France’s Ligue 1 with Olympique de Marseille. However, his strong performances have opened the door to a bigger challenge: playing in the UEFA Champions League, a competition Marseille failed to qualify for this season.
READY FOR THE NEXT STEP
After producing the best football of his career in France, the 24-year-old striker has attracted interest from several clubs during the summer transfer window. The most appealing option appears to be AS Roma, as the Italian side will compete in the Champions League — the perfect stage for Greenwood after recording 48 goals and 16 assists in 81 appearances over the last two seasons at the Vélodrome.
INSIDE THE POTENTIAL TRANSFER
According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Greenwood’s father is already in talks with Roma over a possible move to Serie A, giving the former Manchester United player the opportunity to return to Europe’s biggest club competition. Marseille missed out on Champions League qualification after finishing fifth in Ligue 1, behind Paris Saint-Germain, RC Lens and LOSC Lille, while Olympique Lyonnais secured a place in the qualifying rounds.
Greenwood, who finished as the third-highest scorer of the 2025–26 season and earned a nomination for Ligue 1 Player of the Year, is currently valued at around $57 million. Marseille reportedly see Roma as the ideal destination for the striker’s continued development, despite interest from Juventus, Atlético de Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Fenerbahçe.
The French club are also looking to comply with financial regulations imposed by the DNCG before June 30, making Greenwood’s departure increasingly likely. Marseille’s priority is to rebuild a squad capable of returning to the Champions League rather than simply competing domestically, meaning manager Habib Bèye may have to part ways with one of his biggest stars in order to balance the club’s budget ahead of the 2026–27 campaign.
Relations between Marseille and Roma have strengthened in recent years, with the successful development of Robinio Vaz in Italy serving as another example of the growing connection between the two clubs.
GREENWOOD’S REDEMPTION STORY
Greenwood appears to be enjoying a second chance in football after once being regarded as one of Manchester United’s brightest young talents.
His rise was interrupted in 2022 following allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour, issues that stalled both his momentum and consistency on the pitch. After leaving United under difficult circumstances in 2023, he joined Getafe CF in LaLiga before eventually rediscovering his best form in France.
Now, the big question is whether Greenwood can continue that upward trajectory with Roma.
