Marseille Rout Angers to Strengthen Hold on Third Place
A statement night at Stade Raymond-Kopa. Marseille ran riot from the opening whistle and capped a dominant display with a convincing road win.
Marseille Set the Tone Early
From the opening minutes, Olympique de Marseille imposed themselves with aggressive pressing, quick ball movement and constant attacking intent. The pressure paid off early. In the 18th minute, Amine Gouiri finished off a slick team move, sliding in at the near post after a pinpoint delivery from Murillo to make it 1-0.
The goal only fueled Marseille’s momentum, as the visitors continued to stretch Angers and exploit the spaces left behind.
Greenwood Steals the Spotlight
The second goal was pure quality. Drifting in from the right, Mason Greenwood combined with Emerson, received the return pass and fired a low, left-footed strike inside the far post. Koffi had no chance, and Marseille were firmly in control at 2-0.
Angers tried to respond, but every forward move was met by a well-organized back line and a composed Rulli in goal.
First-Half Blitz Seals Control
Marseille turned the match into a rout before the break. Hamed Traoré found space between the lines and drilled home the third from the edge of the area, before Timothy Weah capped a flowing team move with a close-range header to make it 4-0.
Angers pulled one back in stoppage time through Sbaï, taking advantage of a loose ball in the box, but the damage was already done. Marseille went into halftime with a commanding 4-1 lead after a ruthless opening 45 minutes.
Game Management and Final Touches
After the interval, Marseille dropped the tempo and managed the game with confidence, though the chances kept coming. Greenwood rattled the crossbar as he looked for another, while substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added movement and threat up front.
The fifth goal arrived in the 88th minute. Released in behind by Hojbjerg, Paixao kept his composure and slotted a composed finish across goal to make it 5-1. Deep into stoppage time, Allevinah grabbed a consolation for Angers, setting the final score at 5-2.
Marseille March On, Angers Fall Short
With the victory on Ligue 1 Matchday 18, Marseille move up to 35 points and strengthen their grip on third place, reinforcing their push for European qualification.
For Angers, the night ended in frustration. Stuck on 22 points in 11th, the hosts were ultimately overpowered by Marseille’s intensity and attacking firepower in a one-sided contest.
