Les Aiglons need to respond after collecting just one point from their opening two matches, while Le Mans arrive in Nice determined to prove they can compete from the very beginning of their return to the top flight. The match will kick off at 8:45 p.m. local time in France.
Nice Need to Truly Get Their Season Started
The start has not gone according to plan for OGC Nice and Olivier Pantaloni.
Les Aiglons opened the campaign with a 0-0 draw against Lorient before suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Paris FC. Two matches, one point and still no goals scored explain the urgency to produce an immediate response.
Pantaloni himself used a very clear phrase ahead of the match: he wants his team to “truly get” their season started against Le Mans. The coach knows the team must improve offensively and that playing at home again represents a good opportunity to change their momentum.
In addition, Nice strengthened their squad during the final days of the transfer window with the arrivals of Ismaël Koné and Niels Nkounkou, while Melvin Bard left on loan for Leeds United.
Le Mans Look to Surprise on Their Ligue 1 Return
Le Mans FC have also yet to secure a victory, but they have already shown that they do not intend to simply make up the numbers on their return to Ligue 1.
The team coached by Patrick Videira began with a 2-2 draw against Brest and then came very close to earning another result away from home before suffering a 3-2 defeat against Rennes following a late penalty.
After securing back-to-back promotions to return to the French top flight, Le Mans now face one of their first major away tests of the season.
The Allianz Riviera will put a team under less pressure than their opponent to the test, and Le Mans could look to take advantage of Nice’s need to attack from the opening minutes.
A Special Night at the Allianz Riviera
The match will also carry special significance for the city of Nice.
It will be OGC Nice’s first match of the season at the Allianz Riviera with their supporters in attendance and will feature tributes marking the 10th anniversary of the July 14, 2016 attack. The club will even wear a special jersey designed in memory of the victims.
On the field, most of the pressure will be on the home side. Nice need to secure their first victory and begin making up ground, while Le Mans will look to deliver one of their first major statements since returning to the top flight.
