Joao Neves Saves PSG’s Lead Against Lyon
With a dramatic header in the 94th minute, Joao Neves gave Paris Saint-Germain a crucial 3-2 victory over Lyon, keeping the Parisians at the top of the Ligue 1 table despite defensive struggles and multiple absences.
A Hard-Fought Victory Worth Its Weight in Gold
Paris Saint-Germain escaped Groupama Stadium with a thrilling 3-2 win over Lyon, thanks to a stoppage-time header from Joao Neves. The Portuguese midfielder rose above the defense in the 94th minute to convert a corner kick, earning three vital points for Luis Enrique Martínez’s side, who remain at the top of the Ligue 1 standings.
Coming off a midweek defeat to Bayern Munich and missing key players such as Nuno Mendes, Achraf Hakimi, Ousmane Dembélé, and Desire Doué, PSG faced enormous pressure to respond. With both Marseille and Lens winning earlier in the weekend, the Parisian club needed a victory to maintain their lead in the title race.
The visitors started strong, taking the lead in the 26th minute when Warren Zaire-Emery fired a powerful right-footed shot past the defense after a clever pass from Vitinha. But just four minutes later, Moreira capitalized on a quick counterattack to level the score at 1-1 for Lyon.
Defensive Flaws and a Late Hero
PSG regained control in the 33rd minute after Vitinha forced a turnover high up the pitch and found Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who calmly slotted home for a 2-1 lead. However, familiar defensive lapses resurfaced early in the second half, as Ainsley Maitland-Niles took advantage of poor marking to lob the ball over goalkeeper Chevalier, bringing Lyon back to 2-2.
Despite dominating possession, PSG struggled to create clear chances against a resilient Lyon, who were reduced to ten men late in the match after Nicolás Tagliafico received a second yellow card. When a draw seemed inevitable, Joao Neves appeared once more — heading home in stoppage time to secure a hard-fought 3-2 win.
The goal sparked wild celebrations from Luis Enrique, who has faced increasing scrutiny over the team’s inconsistency. While PSG continue to show defensive weaknesses, their attacking firepower once again made the difference, keeping the reigning champions on top of the Ligue 1 standings.
