Marseille Goes From Crisis to Fighting for European Places

Just a few weeks ago, Olympique de Marseille looked headed for a difficult season. Defeats were piling up, the coach was under increasing pressure, and supporters were growing frustrated. Now, after four consecutive victories in Ligue 1, the picture looks very different.

Under Bruno Génésio, Marseille has climbed to sixth place with 15 points, just two behind the higher European qualification spots. It is a remarkable turnaround for a team that previously suffered five consecutive defeats across the French league and the Europa League.

Still, those results do not tell the whole story. Marseille has rediscovered its winning touch domestically, but defensive weaknesses remain, and its performances in Europe continue to raise questions.

Five Defeats That Put Génésio Under Pressure

The season began with a convincing 4-0 victory over Strasbourg, but defeats to Monaco (2-0), Paris FC (3-2), and Rennes (1-0) quickly followed. Marseille was creating chances but struggling to convert them, while defensive mistakes repeatedly proved costly.

Things got worse with a 4-1 Europa League defeat to Beşiktaş and a 2-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in Le Classique. Five consecutive defeats left Marseille near the bottom of the standings and intensified criticism of Génésio, who had only taken charge in July.

The problem was clear: Marseille could compete for long stretches but failed to turn promising performances into results. Almost every defensive mistake seemed to lead to a goal, while poor finishing became a recurring issue.

Four Victories That Changed Marseille's Season

The turnaround began on October 11 with a 2-0 victory over Troyes. A week later, Marseille thrashed Angers 5-2, rediscovering the attacking firepower that had been missing during its losing streak.

The next win came against Le Havre (4-3), although Marseille nearly threw away a commanding lead. Génésio's side was winning 4-0 late in the match before conceding three goals and desperately holding on for all three points. That collapse was a reminder that the team's problems had not completely disappeared.

The fourth victory arrived on November 1 against Toulouse (2-0), with goals from Amine Harit and Amine Gouiri. Harit opened the scoring early, while Gouiri, who also provided an assist, doubled the advantage before the half-hour mark.

Thirteen goals scored, five conceded, and 12 points from a possible 12. Those numbers reflect Marseille's impressive domestic recovery, although defeats to Olympiacos and Sturm Graz during the same period show that the improvement has yet to carry over into European competition.

Can Marseille Keep Its Winning Streak Going?

Génésio has restored Marseille's attacking efficiency, but the defense remains a concern. His team struggled to protect a four-goal advantage against Le Havre and needed an excellent performance from goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange to preserve its lead against Toulouse.

The coach is not declaring the crisis over just yet. Following the latest victory, he acknowledged that Marseille must continue improving one game at a time, knowing that important issues still need to be addressed.

Marseille now faces two demanding tests. The French club takes on Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday, November 5, in the Europa League, before visiting Lens on Sunday, November 8, in Ligue 1, a match you can watch LIVE on beIN SPORTS. Those two fixtures will reveal whether Marseille's recovery is sustainable or simply a promising run of results.
