Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? Jay-Jay Okocha Picks His Favorite

  • The Nigeria legend made his choice and had plenty of praise for both soccer superstars. Here are all the details.

The eternal debate over who is the greatest soccer player of all time has resurfaced. This time, it was Jay-Jay Okocha, the Nigeria legend, who weighed in on the Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo debate. The former midfielder did not hesitate to pick a side and explained why he considers the Argentine a truly different player.

Why Does Okocha Choose Lionel Messi?

During his appearance on The Obi One Podcast, hosted by John Obi Mikel and Chris McHardy, Okocha was asked the question that has divided soccer fans for years: Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?

The legendary Nigerian’s answer was immediate: “Messi, Messi.”

Okocha, renowned throughout his career for his skill, dribbling and creativity, particularly during his spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers, highlighted precisely those qualities that, in his view, set the Argentine forward apart.

For the Super Eagles legend, Cristiano Ronaldo is an extraordinary footballer, but his greatest strength lies in his ability to score goals.

“Ronaldo Is a Goalscorer; Messi Is on Another Planet”

Okocha made it clear that his choice was not intended to diminish Ronaldo’s achievements. On the contrary, he praised the Portuguese star’s extraordinary finishing ability while drawing a distinction between the two players.

Ronaldo is a special player, but for me, he’s a goalscorer. He can score 10 million goals. He’s a goalscorer. It’s like Erling Haaland. Haaland is a goalscorer,” he explained.

The comparison with Haaland illustrates the former Nigerian international’s argument: in his view, Ronaldo’s defining quality is his extraordinary efficiency in front of goal and his ability to turn chances into goals.

However, when discussing Messi, Okocha shifted his focus toward the Argentine’s natural talent.

“Messi Is Art; He Was Born to Play Soccer”

Okocha’s admiration for the 2022 World Cup winner was unequivocal. The Nigerian believes Messi’s relationship with the ball goes beyond statistics and trophies.

But Messi, Messi is on another planet. Messi is art. Messi was born to play soccer. He would get sick if he didn’t play soccer. He’s a genius. You have to recognize that,” he said.

The verdict from Jay-Jay Okocha adds another perspective to a debate that has dominated the sport for nearly two decades.

Messi, a World Cup winner with Argentina and an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, and Cristiano Ronaldo, the all-time leading scorer in men’s international soccer, continue to fuel the debate even as they enter the later stages of their respective careers.

For Okocha, however, the difference comes down to the nature of their talent: Cristiano Ronaldo represents the efficiency of a goalscorer, while Lionel Messi embodies the genius and artistry of soccer.
