Reports: Olivier Giroud Returns To France To Play In Ligue 1
After a quiet spell in MLS, the legendary French striker is reportedly heading back home to sign with Lille, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
End Of His MLS Chapter
It appears that Olivier Giroud’s time in American soccer is coming to an end. The 38-year-old forward, who joined Los Angeles FC (LAFC) in 2024 as a marquee signing, failed to make a significant impact during his time in MLS. Despite the club’s collective achievements, Giroud managed just five goals and three assists in 37 official appearances, according to BeSoccer statistics.
While part of the squad, LAFC lifted the 2024 US Open Cup and reached the final of the Leagues Cup, but individually, the French striker never found his rhythm. His final match with the club is set for this Sunday against the Vancouver Whitecaps in Los Angeles.
Homecoming With Lille
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Lille has reached an agreement to sign Giroud on a one-year deal. The paperwork is ready, medicals have been scheduled, and everything is in place for the World Cup winner to return to Ligue 1, where his professional career began.
After a year away from European football, the 2018 World Cup champion is returning to France to bring his leadership and veteran presence to a Lille squad aiming to bolster its attacking options. This move marks a new chapter in a storied career that has included spells at Montpellier, Arsenal, Chelsea, and AC Milan, before his stint in the United States.
While his prime may be behind him, his experience and poise in front of goal could prove valuable for Lille in the upcoming season.
This transfer is expected to be one of the most high-profile moves in the French summer window.
