Monaco Goes All In: Pogba and Ansu Fati, High-Profile Reinforcements
AS Monaco is set to announce two signings that could redefine their ambitious project: Paul Pogba and Ansu Fati. Both players arrive with hopes of regaining prominence in European football after seasons marked by inconsistency and questions about their form.
On one hand, Pogba, a 2018 World Cup champion, will look to redeem himself after serving an 18-month suspension for doping — a cloud that has recently overshadowed his career. On the other, Fati, once hailed as Lionel Messi’s natural successor at FC Barcelona, joins on loan with a non-mandatory purchase option, hoping to get regular playing time and regain his confidence.
Ansu Fati, the other prestigious bet by AS Monaco
For Ansu Fati, the challenge is as much mental as it is physical. A product of La Masia, the young winger made a dazzling debut for Barcelona at just 16, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the club’s history in 2019. However, a serious meniscus injury in 2020 halted his rapid rise.
During the 2022–2023 season, Fati played 51 matches and scored 10 goals, but failed to convince Barça’s coaching staff. As a result, he was loaned to Brighton in the Premier League. Under Roberto De Zerbi, he also struggled to make an impact, recording only 4 goals and 1 assist in 27 appearances.
His return to FC Barcelona proved even more difficult. Under new manager Hansi Flick, Fati was mostly sidelined. He made just three starts in La Liga and fell behind players like Raphinha, Ferran Torres, and Fermín López in the pecking order.
Now, AS Monaco offers him a fresh opportunity. In a less media-heavy but demanding environment, the 22-year-old will have a chance to rediscover his best form. The challenge is significant, but so is Fati’s potential, if he can regain his rhythm, confidence, and finishing ability.
The club’s gamble may be risky, but if it pays off, it could be one of the smartest moves in this summer’s transfer window.
