Greenwood Leads Marseille to Champions League after Chaotic Match Against Le Havre
A stunning late goal from Mason Greenwood secured a 3-1 victory for Olympique de Marseille over Le Havre at the Stade Océane, mathematically confirming Roberto De Zerbi’s side a place in next season’s Champions League. Despite a nearly 30-minute suspension due to crowd trouble, the Marseille squad kept their composure and closed the match with authority.
The game, part of the penultimate round of Ligue 1, was tense from the start. Le Havre, still fighting for survival, failed to make their home advantage count. Although they managed to equalize, the individual brilliance of Marseille made the difference in the end.
The opening goal came from Amine Gouiri, who put the visitors ahead. But right after the goal, chaos erupted in the stands. Le Havre supporters stormed into the visiting fans’ section, throwing objects and even entering the pitch. Referee Willy Delajod was forced to suspend the match and send the players to the dressing rooms.
A club official from Le Havre addressed the home fans through the stadium PA system, urging calm so the game could resume. Once order was restored and the situation cooled down, the players returned to the field and the match continued. Le Havre took advantage of the momentum shift and equalized through Issa Soumaré, assisted by Josué Casimir.
1-3. Greenwood seals Marseille’s spot in the Champions League
Just when it seemed the draw would hold, Greenwood stepped up with a moment of brilliance. The former Getafe striker received a pass from Luis Henrique, carved out space, and fired a rocket from outside the box that left goalkeeper Mathieu Gorgelin with no chance. It was his 19th goal of the season, placing him among Ligue 1’s top scorers.
In the final moments, Amine Gouiri struck again to seal the win and the objective for De Zerbi’s team. With this result, Marseille moves into second place in the standings with one match left, which they’ll play at home against Stade Rennes.

This victory not only guarantees their place in next season’s Champions League, but also solidifies the progress of De Zerbi’s project, which has brought out the best in key players like Greenwood throughout a rollercoaster season.
