Clubs in Ligue 1 are fighting tooth and nail each week to avoid relegation and retain their spot in the French top-flight division. This text analyzes what teams have historically needed to maintain their position in France's top tier.
In history, with the French league awarding three points for a win and competing with 18 teams, it's been shown that you need a stellar performance to stay afloat. Over the past five seasons, the average points needed to avoid relegation stands at 37.6; however, this season, that average seems poised to rise a bit more.
In the past, the highest points total for the lowest-placed non-relegated team was 42 points (Marseille 1999-2000), while the lowest hovered around 35 points. Now, the heated battle primarily involves these teams:
- Clermont (22 points)
- Lorient (26 points)
- Le Havre (28 points)
- Metz (29 points)
- Nantes (31 points)
This season, the lowest-placed non-relegated team cannot exceed 41 points, considering the current 15th position occupied by Metz. That number even drops to 40 if the playoff position is maintained (currently held by Le Havre AC).
