La Bombonera Gets a Makeover: Boca Juniors' Iconic Stadium Set for Expansion and Modernization
With 85 years of history and countless memorable moments, La Bombonera, the legendary home of Boca Juniors, is preparing for a historic transformation. Without losing its soul or moving from its traditional neighborhood of La Boca, the club has unveiled an ambitious renovation plan aimed at expanding the stadium's capacity and modernizing its facilities—without purchasing surrounding properties.
Riquelme’s Vision: A Bigger, Better Bombonera
For some time now, Juan Román Riquelme, Boca’s current president, has been quietly developing a project that could become a turning point in the club’s history. Unlike previous proposals that suggested building a new stadium or buying nearby land, this plan focuses on demolishing the current VIP boxes and preferred seating on Iberlucea Street to construct new stands and finally close the stadium’s ring.

The redesign would increase the current capacity—around 56,000 spectators—to an estimated 71,000 to 83,000, depending on FIFA regulations regarding seated areas. Additionally, the number of VIP boxes will grow from 86 to 240, many of which will include outdoor balconies and modern amenities.
The works will not affect pedestrian or street traffic, as they will only occupy airspace above the sidewalk. The project also includes improvements in access points, lighting, food courts, and interior areas. A unified players’ tunnel, relocated team benches, and adjustments to the popular stands are also part of the plan.
Financing, Timeline, and Modern Features
The estimated cost of the renovation is under $100 million, with the club aiming to finance most of it through a three-year VIP box pre-sale. Several national companies, including a major bank, have already expressed interest in supporting the project financially.
While no exact start date has been announced, construction is expected to begin in late 2025 or in 2026. During renovations, Boca will have to play its home matches elsewhere. Possible temporary venues include the Estadio Único in La Plata, San Lorenzo’s Nuevo Gasómetro, or Vélez Sarsfield’s José Amalfitani stadium.
With this renovation, Boca Juniors aims not only to enhance the fan experience but also to reaffirm its identity and legacy. The new Bombonera promises to be a symbol of evolution—modern, expansive, and faithful to the club’s historic roots.
