Eternal Rest: Miguel Ángel Russo’s Ashes to Rest in Argentina’s Football Temples
Miguel Ángel Russo’s final journey is as poetic as his life in football — his ashes will rest where his heart always belonged: inside Argentina’s most iconic stadiums.
A Farewell Written in Football
The legacy of Miguel Ángel Russo goes far beyond trophies and touchlines. The legendary Argentine coach, who passed away on October 8 at the age of 69, will have an eternal farewell rooted in the game he loved most. His family has begun scattering his ashes across the stadiums of four clubs that defined his career — starting with La Bombonera, the same field where he led Boca Juniors to the 2007 Copa Libertadores.
The intimate ceremony was attended by Juan Román Riquelme, along with club executives and first-team players, including Leandro Paredes. In the heart of the pitch where he once stood as a champion, a part of Russo now rests — the first stop in a series of heartfelt tributes planned by his loved ones.
From Boca to Rosario: A Journey Without End
The tribute will continue in the coming weeks at the stadiums of Lanús, Russo’s hometown club where he guided the team to promotion in the 1990s; Estudiantes de La Plata, where he spent his entire playing career and later returned as coach; and Rosario Central, the club he managed on five occasions and led to a championship in 2023.
Each ground represents a chapter of his life — perseverance, growth, triumph, and belonging. Russo was known for his humility, discipline, and deep respect for the game, qualities that earned him admiration from players, fans, and rivals alike.

The Legacy of a Beloved Leader
On October 9, thousands gathered at Boca’s stadium to bid him farewell. Among those present were Liam Gallagher, Tyson Fury, Wayne Rooney, and several legends of football and boxing — a reflection of Russo’s universal influence.
Under his guidance, Boca lifted its last Copa Libertadores, etching his name forever into the club’s golden history. Today, his ashes will not rest in silence but in the roaring stands and sacred fields that defined his life. Miguel Ángel Russo isn’t gone — he’s just moved to another pitch.
