Boca Suffer Another Failure as Huracán Deepens Xeneize Crisis
Huracán defeated Boca Juniors 3-2 after extra time, worsening the club’s sporting crisis as the Xeneize remain without trophies under Juan Román Riquelme’s presidency.
Boca Juniors suffered another painful setback and will finish yet another season without silverware after being eliminated by Huracán in a dramatic and emotionally charged match. Huracán secured a 3-2 victory after extra time, advancing to the next round while leaving Boca trapped in a crisis that shows no signs of ending.
The star of the night was Óscar Romero. The Paraguayan midfielder, who previously played for Boca, delivered a cruel “former player” performance by scoring two decisive goals against his old club. Although he celebrated with some restraint out of respect, his impact proved devastating for the Xeneize.
The match began poorly for Boca. A mistake by Milton Delgado during the buildup allowed Leonardo Gil to open the scoring early for Huracán. Despite struggling throughout the game, Boca managed to find a dramatic equalizer late in regular time to force extra time.
However, everything collapsed during the additional period. Just four minutes into extra time, Lautaro Di Lollo committed a foul on Juan Bisanz inside the box, allowing Romero to score from the penalty spot and make it 2-1. Shortly afterward, Di Lollo endured another nightmare moment when he handled the ball following a corner kick. After a VAR review, referee Pablo Echavarría awarded another penalty, and Romero calmly converted again to seal the final 3-2 scoreline.
The elimination further deepens Boca Juniors’ institutional and sporting problems. Since Juan Román Riquelme became club president, Boca have failed to win another official title, increasing criticism from supporters and intensifying pressure within the club.
Boca’s last trophy came in the 2022 Argentine Super Cup, which was played in March 2023. Since then, the club has suffered repeated disappointments both domestically and internationally, including missing out on continental competitions after being eliminated in the Copa Libertadores qualifying playoffs.
The defeat against Huracán raises even more questions about Boca’s sporting direction and fuels growing debate surrounding the future of Riquelme’s project at the club.
