Boca Begins to Shape Its 2026: Úbeda Confirmed, Departures, Reinforcements, and a Dream Called Libertadores
With the season over, Boca Juniors start making key decisions ahead of 2026, with continuity on the bench, confirmed exits, a near-complete signing, and a clear objective: returning to the top of the Copa Libertadores.
Boca Juniors have begun to move their first major pieces with an eye on 2026. With the campaign already finished, the club’s leadership, headed by Juan Román Riquelme, has started to clear up key questions both on the sidelines and within the squad, all driven by one overarching goal: becoming a true contender again in the Copa Libertadores and chasing a long-awaited seventh title.
Úbeda stays: continuity and board support
One of the main doubts surrounded the future of Claudio “El Sifón” Úbeda. After the defeat against Racing Club and some decisions that sparked debate—such as substituting Exequiel Zeballos—his continuity seemed uncertain. However, as days passed, Juan Román Riquelme opted to back him as head coach, confirming the contract that runs through June 2026, originally signed during the tenure of Miguel Ángel Russo.
The move signals a clear vote of confidence and a commitment to stability—something Boca Juniors have struggled to maintain in recent years. Úbeda will lead the preseason starting Friday, January 2, with the Libertadores as the central challenge.
Changes in the coaching staff
Despite the head coach’s confirmation, changes within the coaching staff are still possible. Currently, Juvenal Rodríguez is Úbeda’s only direct assistant, but the board is evaluating the addition of another name. At one point, former club figures were considered, though the idea of bringing in an external assistant is now gaining traction. No official confirmation has been made yet.
Confirmed departures
The new cycle will also include notable exits. Cristian Lema and Frank Fabra have reached the end of their contracts and will not continue at the club. Ignacio Miramón will also depart, as Boca chose not to activate his purchase option, sending the midfielder back to France.
These departures force a reshuffle in key areas of the squad, especially with international competition in mind.
Reinforcements: one nearly done and big names on the radar
On the arrivals front, Marino Hinestroza is the most advanced name and is practically sealed as the first reinforcement, with only the timing of his arrival left to finalize.
The biggest dream, however, is Paulo Dybala. Boca remain in contact with the striker’s entourage, and the interest is real. His contract with AS Roma expires in June 2026, which currently appears to be the most realistic scenario for a move. A January arrival would only be possible if the player secures an early exit.
Another high-profile name mentioned is Marco Verratti. There have been inquiries, but the deal is considered complex due to salary and contract conditions, making it more of a long-shot rumor for now. Domestically, Alan Lescano has also been mentioned, though there are no confirmed negotiations.
Certainties and renewals
Among the sure things, Edinson Cavani has already renewed his contract through the end of 2026 and will remain one of the team’s leaders. Meanwhile, Ander Herrera, who arrived as a free agent, is under contract, with his future beyond 2025 dependent on his sporting and physical performance.
A clear message for the future
With Úbeda confirmed, departures settled, one signing nearly complete, and major names hovering around the club, Boca Juniors are sending a clear message: 2026 will not be just another year. The Copa Libertadores is once again at the heart of the project, and every decision appears aligned with that ambition.
The secrecy remains tight, the moves are just beginning, but the roadmap is set. The big question lingers:
Is this the squad that Boca need to lift their most coveted trophy once again?
