Ander Herrera Fell in Love With Boca Juniors: "It's a Religion"

  • Ander Herrera calls Boca Juniors the world's biggest fan movement and reveals why the Superclásico against River Plate was unlike anything he experienced.

Ander Herrera Says Boca Juniors Is Unlike Anything He Experienced in Europe

He's played at Old Trafford, experienced the pressure of Paris Saint-Germain and competed on some of European soccer's biggest stages. But for Ander Herrera, nothing quite compares to the passion he witnessed during his time at Boca Juniors. The Spanish midfielder has opened up about his experience in Argentina, describing the club's supporters as unlike anything he had encountered throughout his career.

Speaking on "El Camino de Mario" Herrera reflected on the extraordinary devotion surrounding La Bombonera, where soccer is far more than a weekend ritual. Having joined Boca in January 2025 following spells at Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Athletic Club, the veteran knew all about passionate fan bases. Still, Buenos Aires took things to another level.

"Boca is the biggest fan movement in the world," Herrera declared, making it clear just how deeply his time with the Argentine giants had affected him.

Why Boca Juniors Fans Left Such a Lasting Impression

What struck Herrera most wasn't simply the noise inside La Bombonera. It was the devotion he witnessed everywhere else. Supporters would gather outside hotels, wait near the training ground and become emotional at the mere sight of their favorite players.

"For Boca fans, Boca comes before their families," Herrera said. "People were crying. They came to see us at the training ground when we left in the cars. Boca is madness. It's a religion." For a player who had spent years experiencing European soccer culture, the intensity of that connection was something entirely different.

The Boca Juniors vs. River Plate Superclásico Ander Herrera Will Never Forget

Of all the matches Herrera experienced throughout his career, one stands above the rest: Boca's 2-0 victory over River Plate in November 2025. The Superclásico at La Bombonera delivered an atmosphere the Spaniard insists he had never experienced before, despite playing in some of Europe's most famous stadiums.

"The best football atmosphere I've ever experienced was Boca-River, which we won 2-0," Herrera recalled. "You go up the stairs and see 55,000 crazy people and it's something unique." The former Manchester United midfielder described the occasion as the pinnacle of his experiences as a player, highlighting the remarkable energy generated by Boca's supporters.

Ander Herrera May Have Left Boca Juniors but His Heart Remains in Buenos Aires

Herrera's move to Argentina allowed him to fulfill a long-held ambition of experiencing South American soccer firsthand. After building an impressive career with Manchester United, PSG and Athletic Club, the midfielder wanted to discover what made Boca's famous blue-and-gold shirt so special.

Now back in Spain with Real Zaragoza, Herrera admits that Boca has left a permanent mark on him. "I wasn't born a Boca fan, but I'll be a Boca fan for the rest of my life," he said. His playing days in Buenos Aires may be over, but his connection to La Bombonera is here to stay.
