Riquelme’s Decision: The 7 Candidates to Replace Gago at Boca
Following Fernando Gago’s departure, club president Juan Román Riquelme is evaluating very different profiles — from legends like Carlos Bianchi to surprises like Daniele De Rossi. The club is looking for a coach with character, a clear playing style, and enough credibility to take on the challenge.
“We want a coach who understands what Boca means and comes here to win,” Riquelme reportedly said privately, according to sources close to the Football Council. Guided by that statement, at least seven names are already circulating within the club as potential new managers
Carlos Bianchi
The “Virrey” is synonymous with Boca’s golden era, having won everything from the Copa Libertadores to the Intercontinental Cup and domestic leagues. His last stint as Boca’s manager came in 2013–2014, though without the same success. Now retired, his name still carries weight.
Gabriel Milito
Known for his offensive philosophy, he has coached Estudiantes, Independiente, Argentinos Juniors, and most recently Atlético Mineiro, with whom he reached the 2023 Libertadores final. Despite not winning titles, his style has earned him consideration.
Gustavo Quinteros
With championships in Emelec and Colo Colo, and a recent title with Vélez in the 2024 Copa de la Liga, Quinteros brings tactical discipline and international experience. He also managed the Bolivia and Ecuador national teams.

Kily González
He had coaching spells at Rosario Central and Unión de Santa Fe. His emotional and player-friendly approach appeals to people around Riquelme, though he has yet to win a major trophy.
Gabriel Heinze
Demanding and tactically obsessive, he’s managed Godoy Cruz, Argentinos, Vélez, and Newell's. He hasn’t secured titles but is respected for his development and professionalism.
Walter Samuel
Now one of Lionel Scaloni’s top assistants with the World Cup-winning Argentina national team, he’s praised for his tactical insight. A Boca youth product with a long European career, he could be the dark horse.
Daniele De Rossi
The former Italian player left a strong impression during his brief time at Boca. Currently part of the Italy national team coaching staff, he hasn’t managed a team yet but remains a tempting choice for Riquelme.
Meanwhile, Riquelme watches, consults, and reflects. The decision won’t be easy, but it’s crucial to set the club’s football course. At Boca Juniors, there’s little room for error.
