Milito Leads Boca Juniors Race: “No Calls Yet,” but Pressure Builds
Gabriel Milito has emerged as the top candidate to take over Boca Juniors, but his camp insists no formal contact has been made. Meanwhile, tension rises at Independiente over the potential move of a club icon to their historic rival.
Milito Tops Boca’s Shortlist
Since the departure of Fernando Gago, Boca Juniors has been searching for a new head coach. Two names stand out: Gabriel Milito and Gustavo Quinteros. Both have been on the club's radar before, but it's Milito, the former Atlético Mineiro boss, who is currently leading the race. Without a team since leaving the Brazilian side, Milito has received offers from abroad but appears to be waiting for a concrete proposal to return to coaching.
The opportunity to manage one of South America's biggest clubs is an enticing one. While Mariano Herrón remains in charge on an interim basis, Boca’s board is moving cautiously. According to journalist Andi Bonamino on the show XTRA TIME, Milito’s inner circle sent a clear message: “There have been no calls. Nobody has contacted us.” Club officials echoed the same sentiment: “There are no negotiations with any coach at this time.”
Pressure From Boca and Fallout at Independiente
Despite the denials, Bonamino hinted at possible informal talks: “I believe Román is glued to his phone, in constant contact with the candidates to succeed Gago,” he said live on air. In La Bombonera, Milito is now the most frequently mentioned name among club officials, journalists, and even players. The only obstacle to his appointment might be a personal decision to decline the offer.
The news is not sitting well in Avellaneda. Milito, a beloved figure at Independiente, was captain and a symbol of the club. His potential move to Boca has sparked strong reactions. Journalist Agustín Fantasía, who regularly covers the club, was blunt on TyC Sports: “If Milito goes to Boca, he takes off his Independiente medal. It’s over.” While it's a personal opinion, it reflects the frustration of many fans.
Boca Juniors aims to finalize their new manager before the end of May. For now, all signs point to Gabriel Milito, but his final decision could reshape the future of both Boca and Independiente.
