The Other World Cup Winner With Argentina Who Could Join Ángel Correa at Tigres in Mexico
Tigres UANL from the Liga MX isn’t settling after securing the signing of Ángel Correa, former Atlético de Madrid player and World Cup winner with Argentina in Qatar 2022. Now, the club from San Nicolás de los Garza has set its sights on another member of that same national team: midfielder Guido Rodríguez, who could be the next to join the Monterrey-based side.
A former Liga MX star could return
At 31, Guido Rodríguez is going through an uncertain phase at West Ham United, where he has struggled for minutes since the departure of coach Julen Lopetegui. Although he has received offers to return to Mexican football in the past, the former Real Betis and Club América player chose to remain in Europe. However, this time Tigres' interest appears more serious, and the club is reportedly back in contact with the player’s camp.
This isn’t Tigres’ first attempt to lure Rodríguez. In 2024, when his contract with Betis expired, they approached him, but he declined and opted for the Premier League. Now, with Ángel Correa as the new offensive leader, Tigres’ board believes that adding Guido would significantly strengthen Robert Dante Siboldi’s squad.
What about América? Not in the picture for now
With Guido Rodríguez potentially returning to Mexico, many wonder whether Club América, where he once shined, might try to bring him back. However, sources close to the club have ruled out any such move. According to journalist Julio ‘Profe’ Ibáñez, there is no contact between América and the player or his representatives. Additionally, full-back Ralph Orquin made it clear that the team’s objective isn’t to make flashy signings but to build a solid group that fits coach André Jardine’s system.
While other teams like Pumas make headlines with international stars such as Aaron Ramsey, and Tigres strengthens with big names like Correa, América has opted for a quieter transfer window, focusing on domestic talents like Alexis Gutiérrez, Isaías Violante, and Orquin himself.
The transfer window is still open—and Tigres isn't slowing down
With Ángel Correa having already passed his medical and set to debut on July 19, Tigres could make another major splash in the market if they manage to convince Guido Rodríguez. If the deal goes through, the team would have two current World Cup champions in its ranks—a clear sign that the club is going all-in for the Apertura 2025.
