Xabi Alonso Ends Controversy and Praises Vinícius Jr. After Madrid’s Win at Getafe
Real Madrid passed a tough test at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, and after the victory, Xabi Alonso made it clear that Vinícius Jr. remains a key figure — even when he starts on the bench. The manager highlighted the Brazilian’s impact, as he played a decisive role by forcing Allan Nyom’s red card and unlocking a match that had become far more complicated than expected.
What Did Xabi Alonso Say About Vinícius?
“Vinícius had a great impact. We spoke this morning about how he could be just as important coming off the bench as starting, and that’s exactly what happened. The imbalance he created and the cards he forced gave us the advantage. Everyone has a role to play — it’s a very important win,” said Alonso in the post-match press conference.
Vinícius was the spark that broke Getafe’s defensive structure. With his pace and unpredictability, he changed the rhythm of the game just when Los Blancos needed it most, helping the team stay top of LaLiga ahead of El Clásico against Barcelona.
Arda Güler and Courtois Step Up
Alonso also praised Arda Güler, who added creativity and vision in the closing stages:
“Arda had a good impact too. The goal came from between the lines, where he combines very well with Kylian. It was crucial because it was hard to find space and rhythm,” the coach explained.
He also credited Thibaut Courtois, whose stoppage-time save secured the win:
“Thibaut was fundamental. We shouldn’t have conceded that chance, but he did his job and we took the three points.”

A Victory Built on Grit and Maturity
While acknowledging it wasn’t Madrid’s best performance, Alonso valued the collective effort:
“Playing Getafe is never easy. You have to know how to compete, and we did that well. We created a lot on the left side in the first half, though we lacked something in the final third. It was a demanding match, but the team showed character.”
On David Alaba, who was subbed off at halftime, Alonso clarified:
“His calf tightened up, and we didn’t want to take risks. We’ll assess him tomorrow.”
Finally, he dismissed the notion that Real Madrid depend solely on Kylian Mbappé, who once again found the net:
“I wouldn’t say we depend on Kylian. He’s in great form and decisive, but we need everyone. Goals win games, but there’s a lot of work behind them.”
Real Madrid left Getafe with a hard-fought victory — and with Alonso not only cooling the debate over Vinícius’ role, but reinforcing the message that his squad functions as a united, balanced team where every player — from Mbappé to Güler — plays a part in the title chase.
