Will Messi Attend the Inauguration of the New Camp Nou? This Is What Joan Laporta Said
The remodeling of the Camp Nou began in June 2023, aiming to transform the stadium into a state-of-the-art venue befitting FC Barcelona, one of the biggest clubs in the world. The reopening was initially scheduled for August 10 with the traditional Joan Gamper Trophy match, but delays have prevented that date, and even the idea of inaugurating the stadium in September against Valencia in LaLiga had to be ruled out.
Laporta Confirms the Commitment to Return as Soon as Possible
Club president Joan Laporta, in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, stated that he remains confident the team will return to the Spotify Camp Nou this season, while also emphasizing that the club respects the city council's decisions on scheduling. "We will return to Camp Nou as soon as possible. There is no criticism of the City Council—we respect their decisions and continue working together," he said.

Laporta highlighted the stadium’s significance to both the city and the club, adding that he maintains constant communication with the construction company and local authorities to speed up the process. He also stressed the economic impact of any further delays, as starting January 2026, the club expects to generate revenue from VIP boxes to help finance the project. “We’re not considering the possibility of not returning,” he affirmed.
The Anticipated Tribute to Lionel Messi
One of the most emotional points mentioned by the president was the plan to pay tribute to Lionel Messi during the inauguration of the new Camp Nou. Laporta revealed that the club has already spoken with Messi’s family and that everyone is excited about the idea. “It would be beautiful to open the new stadium with a tribute to Messi and his family,” he said.
Laporta also confirmed that Barcelona has requested to play its first group stage match of the Champions League, scheduled between September 16 and 18, away from home to allow more time to return to the Camp Nou. Although contingency plans exist, he stated that the club is not currently considering extending their stay at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
Regarding the Joan Gamper Trophy, which this year was moved to the Johan Cruyff Stadium, Laporta explained that the club proposed partially opening Camp Nou to allow 30,000 fans, but the City Council rejected the idea due to the stadium’s current condition.
Lastly, the president announced that by the second quarter of 2026, the draft of the new Palau Blaugrana will be presented. The new arena is being designed to meet NBA standards, in case the American league eventually expands to Europe. He also revealed that the club is in advanced talks with major U.S. companies for investments, though ownership of the venue will remain solely with the club.
The wait continues, but the excitement to return to the legendary stadium—and to honor Messi—remains strong among Barcelona’s leadership and fans alike.
