Why Isn’t Kylian Mbappé Playing for Real Madrid vs Real Betis?
Kylian Mbappé will not be available for Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid after it was confirmed that he suffered an injury that will sideline him for an extended period.
How long will Mbappé be out?
French forward Kylian Mbappé will miss at least Real Madrid’s LaLiga 2026 opener against Real Betis after a knee injury was detected via MRI, the club announced on Wednesday.
According to the official medical report, Mbappé has been diagnosed with a knee sprain and is awaiting further evaluation. Although the attacker trained on Tuesday in a session open to the public without showing apparent discomfort, he will not be available this Sunday for a key match for the side coached by Xabi Alonso.
Additionally, the French star is a serious doubt for the Spanish Super Cup semifinal, scheduled for January 8 in Jeddah against Atlético de Madrid. Should Real Madrid advance, Mbappé could also miss the final. After the Super Cup, Madrid’s schedule includes matches against Levante UD (January 17) and AS Monaco in the Champions League (January 20).
Mbappé’s absence is a major offensive blow for Real Madrid. He is the team’s top scorer this season with 18 goals (half of the squad’s total) and the leading scorer in LaLiga in 2025 with 39 goals, well ahead of Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona) and Julián Álvarez (Atlético).
