José Mourinho once again made it clear that he has no intention of getting involved in controversy surrounding Lamine Yamal. The Real Madrid manager was asked on Monday about the Barcelona forward’s recent comments regarding the 2026 Ballon d’Or, but chose to stay out of the debate and avoid any response that could further fuel the rivalry between the two Spanish giants.

MOURINHO PREFERS TO STAY OUT OF THE CONTROVERSY

Lamine Yamal said he believes he deserves to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, putting himself alongside Kylian Mbappé among the leading contenders for the prestigious individual award. The Spanish forward backed up his claim with a season in which he won LaLiga with Barcelona and the World Cup with Spain, while also being named LaLiga’s best player for the 2025-26 season.

Asked about Yamal’s comments, Mourinho was unequivocal and refused to directly assess the Barcelona star.

“I don’t comment on a player’s statements. I respect every opinion, but I don’t comment,” the Portuguese manager replied.

The decision can be interpreted as a strategic one. Mourinho has no reason to turn an individual debate over the Ballon d’Or into another chapter of the Real Madrid vs. Barcelona rivalry, particularly with his immediate priority being his team’s performances.

The Portuguese coach has also repeatedly stressed that his focus is on his squad and Real Madrid’s objectives. During the same press conference, he spoke at length about players such as Arda Güler, Vinícius Júnior and Aurélien Tchouaméni, keeping the spotlight on his own team rather than outside debates.
