Toni Kroos Defends Vinícius After His Outburst in El Clásico
German midfielder Toni Kroos came to the defense of his former teammate Vinícius Jr. after the Brazilian’s controversial reaction during El Clásico against Barcelona, saying that “nobody can judge the emotions” he felt, while also advising him to “control his anger a bit more.”
Vinícius Shines Against Barcelona but Sparks Controversy After Substitution
Real Madrid claimed a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu, but the celebration was overshadowed by Vinícius Jr.’s frustrated reaction after being substituted by Rodrygo in the 72nd minute. The Brazilian stormed off the field visibly upset, refusing to look at coach Xabi Alonso, muttering “I’m leaving this team” before heading straight down the tunnel — though he later returned to the bench.
On the pitch, Vinícius was one of Real Madrid’s standout performers, repeatedly beating Jules Koundé and driving the attack with his trademark intensity. It was arguably his best display under Xabi Alonso, especially after Lamine Yamal’s provocative comments before the match, which had fired up both sides.
However, his angry reaction to the substitution created tension in the dressing room following a crucial win that kept Los Blancos on top of La Liga. The incident escalated further after the final whistle when Vinícius clashed verbally with Yamal, reigniting their rivalry.
Kroos Understands the Frustration but Offers Advice
Speaking on his Einfach mal Luppen podcast, Toni Kroos publicly defended Vinícius, showing empathy for his emotions in such a high-stakes environment.
“When you play an exceptional game, especially in a Clásico, you don’t want to come off,” said Kroos. “From the outside, people can judge easily, but nobody really knows what it feels like to be on that pitch in front of 80,000 fans, winning 2-1, and suddenly being substituted. Nobody can imagine that emotion.”

Still, the former Real Madrid star encouraged the Brazilian to handle such moments differently. “With some distance, he’ll probably realize he could have managed his anger better. I understand his frustration, but the way it was expressed wasn’t ideal. It’s an extremely emotional situation — I’ve been there myself — and sometimes it’s easy to lose control,” Kroos added.
Real Madrid Stands Behind Vinícius
According to Spanish outlet AS, Real Madrid will not fine or discipline Vinícius Jr. for his outburst. The club reportedly views it as an emotional reaction in the heat of the moment and trusts Xabi Alonso to deal with the situation internally.
“There are always different personalities in a dressing room,” Alonso said after the match. “We’ll enjoy the win first, and then, of course, we’ll have a conversation.”
Kroos’ defense highlights the strong support Vinícius still enjoys within the club. Yet, the Brazilian knows he must find a balance — channeling his passion and fire without letting frustration overshadow his brilliance on the field.
