Szczesny Embraces New Role at Barça: “My Job Is to Prepare Joan García”
From hero between the posts to mentor in the shadows, Szczesny embraces a new challenge at Barça.
The Polish goalkeeper, a key figure in last season’s historic treble, now accepts his role as a substitute with complete ease and focuses on guiding the young Spanish keeper in his path to consolidating himself at the elite level.
A Veteran’s New Mission
Far from feeling uncomfortable about losing the spotlight, Wojciech Szczesny has embraced a very different function at FC Barcelona. After renewing his contract in the summer for one season, with an optional second year, the former Juventus keeper admitted that his responsibility is now to prepare Joan García. “I’m a substitute, and unless there are surprises, I’ll remain one. My job this season is to prepare Joan as best as possible for the matches,” he said honestly.
It hasn’t been an easy transition for a goalkeeper used to daily pressure, but Szczesny is proud to contribute in another way. “I’m very proud to play this role, as I was prepared for it when I signed my new contract,” explained the Pole, who was instrumental in last season’s treble-winning campaign.
Blind Faith in Joan García
Despite only working together for a few months, Szczesny has no doubts about the talent of the young Spanish goalkeeper. “I think he’s got incredible potential and is already among the best in Europe physically,” he insisted. The Pole’s experience is now a vital support system for Joan, who faces the challenge of holding down the Barça goal in a demanding season.
Szczesny also stressed that the biggest challenge for García will be gaining experience at the highest level. “It’s not easy to play every three days under so much pressure. That’s something he needs to learn,” he said, making clear that his mission is to help Joan find consistency and balance across the season.

Pride and Commitment
Instead of showing frustration, Szczesny radiates calm and commitment to Barça’s project. “I’ll try to help him maintain a constant level throughout the season. I hope I can contribute to his success,” he concluded. His words reflect the maturity of a player who has adapted to a secondary role, putting the team’s success above individual glory.
