FC Barcelona and Wojciech Szczęsny have reached an agreement to extend the goalkeeper’s contract, which will now run until June 30, 2027.

The Polish shot-stopper continuity is a reward for his outstanding season defending the Blaugrana goal, especially considering the unexpected and unique circumstances surrounding his arrival.

An Unexpected Signing That Paid Off

Following the long-term injury to Marc-André ter Stegen, Barça was forced to look for a goalkeeper with the transfer window already closed. That’s when Szczęsny came into the picture, having been retired for several months. Without hesitation, he accepted the challenge and proved why he has been regarded as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers for the past decade.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves

With 30 appearances this season, Szczęsny kept 14 clean sheets and most remarkably remained undefeated in La Liga whenever he was in goal. Beyond statistics, coach Hansi Flick praised the maturity and leadership Szczęsny brought to a young Barça squad.

This new chapter with Barcelona adds to an already impressive résumé. Throughout his career which seemed to have ended last August he has played for major clubs such as Arsenal, Roma, and Juventus, after leaving his native Warsaw at the age of 16. He has shown consistency and skill not only in La Liga, but also in the Premier League and Serie A.

Titles and Honors

As a Barcelona player, Szczęsny has added the La Liga title, the Spanish Super Cup, and the Copa del Rey during the 2024/25 season. These trophies bring his total to 14 collective titles, in addition to individual accolades such as Polish Footballer of the Year (2022) and Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year (2019/20).

During his seven seasons with Juventus, he lifted three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies, and two Supercoppa Italiana. In total, he has played over 500 professional matches, including 83 appearances in the UEFA Champions League, with the last eight coming as a Barcelona player.

With this renewal, Barça secures the experience and reliability of a goalkeeper who has become an unexpected yet vital asset to the squad. Szczęsny will continue guarding the Blaugrana goal for at least two more seasons.
