Social Media Explodes After Guti’s Comparison: He Picks Arda Güler Over Pedri Just Days Before El Clásico
The buildup to El Clásico is already in full swing, and as usual, the comments of former legends are adding fuel to the fire ahead of LaLiga’s most anticipated match. This time, the spotlight is on José María Gutiérrez “Guti”, former Real Madrid midfielder and current pundit on El Chiringuito, who sparked a storm on social media after declaring that he prefers Arda Güler over Pedri.
Guti picks Güler and divides the fans
In a video shared by LaLiga’s official account, Guti was challenged to choose between the two young stars representing the future of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona — Spain’s Pedri and Turkey’s Güler. In nearly every category — speed, dribbling, shooting, and physicality — the former Madrid playmaker chose Güler without hesitation, making his preference for the young Turkish talent crystal clear.
When asked about passing and football intelligence, Guti was more balanced, admitting that both players share similar quality. However, when it came to the final question — “Who do you choose?” — the ex-midfielder didn’t hesitate: “Arda Güler.”
That answer set social media ablaze. Fans immediately reacted, with some accusing him of bias — “That’s what you call supporting your own club,” one user wrote — while others defended his opinion, arguing that the Turkish youngster has a higher ceiling than the Spaniard.
Controversy brews ahead of El Clásico
The remark comes at a crucial time, with both teams preparing for their European fixtures before the much-anticipated showdown between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Xabi Alonso’s side will host Juventus at the Santiago Bernabéu, while Hansi Flick’s team — with the German coach suspended from the touchline — travels to face Olympiacos.
The comparison between Pedri and Güler has not only divided fans but also reignited the eternal rivalry between the two clubs. While the Barcelona midfielder is already an established talent with Champions League experience and several titles to his name, the Turkish prodigy is still finding his rhythm after overcoming a string of injuries.
Even so, Güler’s talent continues to excite the Madrid faithful, who see him as one of the brightest prospects for the club’s future. And although Guti merely shared his personal opinion, his comments have succeeded in turning up the heat even more ahead of an El Clásico that promises plenty of drama both on and off the pitch.
