Simeone Explodes: “No Need to Even Talk”
Controversy at the Metropolitano
Atlético de Madrid lost the first leg of their series against FC Barcelona. The Colchoneros fell 1-2 at the Metropolitano in a match filled with controversy.
Diego Simeone, questioned in the press conference about the red card overturned for Gerard Martín —a play that could have changed the course of the match— chose not to elaborate too much: “It already happened, saying anything doesn’t help.” However, he sent a clear message by comparing the incident with a similar play in Betis vs Rayo, where a sending-off was enforced.
The Argentine coach was more direct when showing his frustration: “When the play is that obvious, no need to even talk,” hinting at his disagreement with the referee’s decision.
Eyes on the Champions League
Despite the defeat, Atlético is already focused on the Champions League, where they will face FC Barcelona again. Simeone is aware that the first leg will be at Camp Nou, a venue where the Culés will aim to impose conditions and gain an advantage before the return leg at the Metropolitano.
The “Cholo” also addressed the sending-off of Nico González. He acknowledged that the second yellow card was correct, as the player arrived late to the play, although he noted there was an offside earlier that went uncalled.
Beyond the controversy, Simeone made it clear that his team must move on and focus on what’s ahead. The challenge in the Champions League will be demanding: visiting Barcelona and getting a result that allows them to approach the second leg with greater peace of mind.
His statements were measured but left room for interpretation. Without directly blaming the referee, the coach suggested there were inconsistent criteria, fueling the debate after a match that also leaves Barcelona as the sole leader, following Real Madrid’s defeat.
Undoubtedly, Tuesday in Barcelona promises intense emotions.
