Sergio Ramos to Getafe? Club President Confirms Talks but Reveals a Major Obstacle
Sergio Ramos could be facing an unexpected twist in his career. Getafe's president has acknowledged discussions with the former Real Madrid defender's representatives, although one key issue stands in the way of a potential deal.
Getafe president Ángel Torres confirmed on Sunday that he has held discussions with René Ramos, Sergio Ramos' brother and agent, over a potential move for the former Real Madrid defender.
However, Torres made it clear that signing Ramos is not currently a priority, as Getafe already have six center-backs and are focused on strengthening other areas of the squad.
Speaking on Tablero Deportivo, a program on Spain's Radio Nacional de España (RNE), Torres admitted that Getafe would be willing to bring in the former Real Madrid captain if the opportunity arose.
"Yes," he replied when asked whether he would sign Sergio Ramos if he became available, before confirming that contact had already been made with the player's camp.
"His agent, his brother, has been speaking with me," Torres said.
Why is Sergio Ramos not a priority for Getafe?
The Getafe president explained that José Bordalás has identified other positions as more pressing priorities, particularly the wide areas, while the club already has sufficient options in central defense.
"We have six center-backs. It's not a position we need to strengthen right now... The coach wanted players out wide. But it's still not too late. I mean, he's on our list of potential signings," Torres explained.
Although Ramos remains an option under consideration, any move would depend on Getafe's sporting plans and the priorities established by Bordalás.
Could Sergio Ramos join Getafe in January?
Torres also refused to rule out revisiting the deal during the January transfer window, stressing that the club has been interested in the defender for some time.
"He could come because it's something we've discussed. It's a situation we've been looking at for a long time. But it wasn't the priority. The priority was strengthening the wide areas, and if that doesn't happen, then perhaps, if not now, in January, if we were to bring in a center-back... But right now we're well covered in that position," he said.
His comments leave open the possibility of Getafe reconsidering a move for Ramos, depending on how the squad's needs develop.
Sergio Ramos remains a free agent after leaving Monterrey
Sergio Ramos, 40, has been without a club since leaving Mexican side Monterrey at the end of 2025.
His last official appearance came on December 6, 2025, when Monterrey suffered a 3-2 defeat against Toluca in the Apertura tournament semifinals.
A move to Getafe would mark his return to Spanish football following his spell abroad.
Could Sergio Ramos reunite with Dani Carvajal at Getafe?
Another intriguing aspect of a potential transfer is the possibility of Ramos reuniting with Dani Carvajal, his former teammate at Real Madrid.
Carvajal recently joined Getafe on a contract running until June 30, 2027, meaning Ramos' arrival would bring the two former Real Madrid players together again.
For now, Getafe's president has confirmed the interest and discussions, but no agreement or definitive transfer negotiations have been announced.
Three key takeaways from Sergio Ramos' potential Getafe move
- Talks confirmed: Ángel Torres acknowledged discussions with René Ramos, the defender's brother and agent.
- Not an immediate priority: Getafe already have six center-backs, while José Bordalás is prioritizing reinforcements in wide positions.
- January remains an option: Getafe could revisit the possibility during the winter transfer window, potentially setting up a reunion with Dani Carvajal.
