Sergio Ramos and Sevilla: What we know about a possible purchase
Reports in Spain suggest that former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos could play a key role in the potential sale of Sevilla FC
Reports in Spain suggest that former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos could play a key role in the potential sale of Sevilla FC, but not as a player. Instead, the ex-Spain international—who recently ended his contract with CF Monterrey in Mexico—could enter the club as an investor or owner, a move that would significantly alter his future in Spanish football.
Sergio Ramos would not be allowed to play in Spain
With interest from U.S. investors reportedly cooling after a reduced offer, local outlet MuchoDeporte claims that Ramos has already held initial talks with Sevilla, the club where he was developed, to understand the conditions of a possible investment.
However, Spanish law would prevent Ramos from playing professionally in Spain if he becomes an owner or investor in a club competing in the same league. The regulation bars active players from holding financial interests in competitions in which they participate. As a result, Ramos would be forced to either retire or continue his career outside Spain, whether in another European league or elsewhere in the world.
Matías Almeyda reacts to Ramos ownership rumors
Sevilla head coach Matías Almeyda was asked about the possibility of Ramos joining the club as an investor. The Argentine chose a cautious and respectful tone.
“I don’t know whether it’s true or not, but those are matters I don’t get involved in. I respect Sergio as a player and as a man—he’s a global legend. What he decides to do with his finances is not something for me to comment on.”
