Ronald Araujo Opens Up About His Mental Health Struggles
The Difficult Period Faced by the FC Barcelona Captain
Ronald Araujo, captain of FC Barcelona, revealed in an interview with Marca the difficult process he went through to regain his best football form and overcome the mental health struggles he experienced midway through the season.
The Uruguayan defender asked the club for permission to focus on his emotional well-being after going through a challenging sporting period. Among the toughest moments were his sending-off in a Champions League match against Chelsea, where his team suffered a 3-0 defeat, as well as the criticism he received following the elimination against Inter Milan and the red card against PSG in the 2024 Champions League quarterfinals.
“It was a combination of many things. I knew something was wrong because I didn’t feel well, I wasn’t happy. I had been carrying a lot for a long time until I finally exploded,” Araujo confessed.
The center-back recalled that match as a turning point in his life. “I remember going to the locker room and saying, ‘Enough.’ I realized I needed to talk about it with my wife, with the club, and ask for help. It has been the best decision of my life.”
The Support of Hansi Flick and the Club
Araujo also acknowledged that mental health still does not receive enough importance in football despite the enormous pressure professional players face.
“There is too much pressure, and it can affect you both on and off the pitch, which is sometimes the most important thing,” he explained.
German manager Hansi Flick was one of the biggest sources of support during the process. According to the Uruguayan defender, Flick understood the situation naturally and respectfully from the very beginning.
In addition, the entire Blaugrana board fully backed his decision, showing the affection and trust they have in him within the club.
A Role Model On and Off the Pitch
This experience completely changed his life. “I started enjoying football again, which is what I love the most. I’ve grown a lot during this time, and great years are coming in my career,” he stated.
Araujo remains under contract with Barcelona until 2031 and currently feels valued within the institution. Although there was speculation about a possible departure from the club due to his situation, the support he received restored his confidence and helped him recover his best version.
The case of Ronald Araujo once again highlights the importance of mental health among elite athletes. His courage to seek help during one of the most difficult moments of his career makes him an example for many both inside and outside football.
