Reports: Atlético de Madrid Reach Agreement With Lyon for Thiago Almada
The Argentine midfielder is set to leave France and join Simeone’s squad ahead of the new season.
The transfer market continues to heat up, and according to reports from Portugal, Thiago Almada is on the verge of becoming the latest addition to Atlético de Madrid.
As reported by Portuguese outlet RÉCORD and confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Atlético have reached a deal with Olympique Lyon to sign Almada, with personal terms also agreed. The Madrid side will acquire a percentage of the player’s rights, with a total valuation of €40 million.
Simeone’s New Weapon After Correa’s Departure
Almada, who previously played for Botafogo before moving to Lyon, is expected to fill the void left by Ángel Correa, who recently transferred to Tigres UANL in Mexico. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder shares an agent with both Correa and Rodrigo De Paul, the latter also rumored to be on his way to Inter Miami.
The arrival of Almada signals Atlético’s intention to refresh their squad with young South American talent. The Argentine international, who has 10 caps and 4 goals with the senior national team, was a starter in the last four international matches and notably assisted Julián Álvarez against Chile.
Benfica and Others Left Behind in the Race
Although Benfica had been close to finalizing a deal for Almada, the player’s preference for Atlético and the influence of João Félix’s departure redirected the deal toward the Spanish capital. Other clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Zenit were also in the running, but ultimately, Almada's desire to play under Diego Simeone proved decisive.
A versatile playmaker, Almada is known for his dribbling, creativity, and ability to operate both centrally and on the wing. His playing style is reminiscent of Correa, offering individual flair and playmaking ability that could prove vital for Atlético in the 2025-26 campaign.
This move continues the club’s effort to bring in younger players, with Almada joining names like Baena, Ruggeri, and soon-to-be-announced Johnny Cardoso, all born in the 2000s.
