Report Reveals Xabi Alonso Planned to Bench Vinícius Jr. at Real Madrid but Was Forced to Change Course
The heavy defeat to PSG exposed internal tensions at the club, including a bold decision that nearly sidelined the Brazilian star.
Xabi Alonso Was Ready to Bench Vinícius
The 0–4 loss suffered by Real Madrid against Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semifinals was not only a sporting setback—it also brought to light internal frictions in the locker room under the leadership of Xabi Alonso. One of the most striking revelations concerns Vinícius Júnior, who was reportedly on the verge of being dropped from the starting lineup.
According to reports from Radio Estadio, the Real Madrid coach had initially decided to bench Vinícius in favor of a front line composed of Kylian Mbappé and Gonzalo García. However, a last-minute injury to Alexander-Arnold, who was expected to play as a wingback, forced a tactical reshuffle. As a result, Vinícius started the match but was deployed on the right flank—an unfamiliar role in which he appeared uncomfortable and disconnected.
Vinícius's Status as a Leader No Longer Guaranteed
Sources suggest this wasn’t an isolated decision. Within the club, there is growing unease about Vinícius—not only regarding his on-field performances but also his stance on contract negotiations. The Brazilian has yet to sign a new deal and is reportedly unhappy with the shift in hierarchy, which now places Mbappé as the centerpiece of the team.
Some interpret the attempt to bench Vinícius as a strategic message from the club and coaching staff: either accept a secondary role or consider moving on. As stated on Radio Estadio, the sentiment is clear—"If you can’t accept being number two, or even number three behind the coach, maybe this isn’t the place for you anymore."

The crushing loss to PSG left little room for excuses. Mbappé failed to make an impact, Gonzalo went unnoticed, and Vinícius, out of position, was ineffective. Yet the most revealing aspect wasn't what happened on the pitch, but rather what nearly occurred: Xabi Alonso was prepared to sideline a player who, until recently, was considered untouchable. If forced to choose between Mbappé and Vinícius, the manager’s preference seems crystal clear.
