Real Madrid Opens Presidential Election Process
The Real Madrid officially opened its presidential election process. Starting now, candidates interested in running for the club’s presidency will have a ten-day window to submit their applications, with the deadline set for May 23.
Florentino Pérez confirmed the election call during a controversial press conference that generated significant buzz both inside and outside the Madridista environment. Although the current president remains the favorite and continues to be the club’s most influential figure, this time he could face genuine opposition, something that has not happened in several election cycles.
Enrique Riquelme Emerges as Potential Challenger
One of the names gaining the most momentum is Enrique Riquelme, president of Grupo Cox. The Spanish businessman confirmed during an event in Mexico that he intends to compete for the presidency of the Spanish giants.
Riquelme had already considered running in the 2021 elections but ultimately withdrew due to the limited time available to prepare his candidacy. Now, in a letter addressed to Florentino Pérez, he requested an extension of the election deadlines in order to properly structure his project. The current president quickly responded: “When I ran in the 2000 elections, I did not ask for more time. I ran and won.”
To compete for the presidency of Real Madrid, candidates must meet very specific requirements: they must have been club members for more than 20 years and present a financial guarantee equivalent to 15% of the institution’s annual budget, a figure close to €187 million.

The Club’s Sporting Future Is Also at Stake
If no formal candidacy other than Florentino Pérez’s is submitted, the current president would automatically be ratified in the position.
Although Enrique Riquelme has made his intentions clear, he also acknowledged that he still needs to reorganize personal and business priorities before officially confirming his participation in the election process.
For now, Florentino Pérez and Enrique Riquelme are the only names publicly linked to the Madrid presidency.
Meanwhile, the club is going through a delicate sporting moment, and several important decisions appear to be on hold until the institutional future of Real Madrid becomes clear. Among them is the selection of the club’s next head coach. Multiple reports suggest that Florentino Pérez’s inner circle has practically secured the return of José Mourinho; however, a possible change in the presidency could completely alter those plans.
