Real Madrid 4-1 Real Sociedad: Mbappe scores hat-trick in Mourinho's homecoming

Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4-1 in Jose Mourinho's first competitive match back at Estadio Bernabeu.

Along with Mbappe's treble, Jude Bellingham provided two assists and Vinicius Junior also got on the scoresheet as Los Blancos moved to the top of LaLiga with a dominant performance at home.

Madrid started on the front as Mbappe and Vinicius both created chances for one another before being denied by Alex Remiro, while Mikel Oyarzabal was expertly kept out by Thibaut Courtois at the other end in the opening 30 minutes.

Sergio Gomez almost put La Real ahead with an audacious volley from the left side of the box, but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock in the 40th minute as Federico Valverde slipped Mbappe into the penalty area, allowing the Frenchman to take a touch before picking out the top-left corner.

However, La Real were level heading into half-time as Luka Sucic fired in a rebound after Job Ochieng saw his initial shot blocked by Ibrahima Konate, though Madrid were back ahead on the hour mark as Mbappe played a give-and-go with Bellingham before curling past Remiro.

And it was 3-1 just eight minutes later. Bellingham saw his shot closed down, but he quickly dispossessed Luken Beitia in the opposition before squaring to Vinicius for the simplest of finishes into an unguarded net, giving Madrid some breathing room.

Mbappe then completed his hat-trick late on, lifting the ball over the Remiro following a brilliant reverse pass from Vinicius to wrap up a perfect homecoming for Mourinho.

Madrid's stars shine bright under Mourinho

Mourinho's name was sung by the Madrid faithful in the closing stages of this contest, and it comes as no surprise after the way his star players performed for him in the Spanish capital.

Mbappe became the first player to score a hat-trick in LaLiga this season, while his six for Madrid across all competitions since joining in 2024-25 are at least twice as many as any other LaLiga player.

The Frenchman led Madrid players for both shots (eight) and touches in the box (13) against La Real, against whom he has now scored seven goals, his most against any in the competition.

Bellingham and Vinicius both directly contributed to two goals, with the former also winning a match-high nine duels (9/14), while Arda Guler created five chances; he also created seven in Madrid's opening win over Espanyol.

Madrid's dominance was highlighted by their expected goals (xG) tally of 3.14, while they restricted La Real to just 0.57 as Mourinho's perfect start to his second stint continues.
