Real Madrid 3-2 Celta Vigo: Mbappe brace keeps the pressure on Barcelona
Real Madrid ensured the gap to leaders Barcelona remained at four points ahead of next week's Clasico after beating Celta Vigo on Sunday.
Kylian Mbappe scored twice to help Real Madrid keep the pressure on LaLiga leaders Barcelona following a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Celta Vigo on Sunday.
Madrid remain four points behind Hansi Flick's team, who beat Real Valladolid on Saturday, with four games of their respective league seasons remaining.
Carlo Ancelotti's side got themselves ahead in the 33rd minute when a short corner routine saw Arda Guler pick out the top-left corner with a stunning curling effort.
Mbappe doubled the hosts' lead six minutes later when he collected Jude Bellingham's pass before ending a driving run with another fine finish past Vicente Guaita.
The French international grabbed his brace three minutes after the break, racing in behind after Guler's defence-splitting ball before sending a left-footed finish home.
But Celta Vigo reduced the deficit in the 69th minute when Javi Rodriguez finished from close range after Hugo Sotelo's neat flick from a corner was cleared off the line.
The visitors threatened a nervy finish at the Santiago Bernabeu when substitute Williot Swedberg rounded off a fine passing move with a smart finish past Thibaut Courtois.
Pablo Duran almost completed the turnaround soon after but saw his shot saved by Courtois, but Madrid were able to hold on to seal an important three points.
Data Debrief: Mbappe closing in on Madrid record
After a difficult start to his time in the Spanish capital, Mbappe has certainly found his feet in what has been an outstanding debut season for Los Blancos.
Indeed, the 26-year-old has now scored 24 goals in 30 games in LaLiga this season. Only Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009-10 (26) and Ruud Van Nistelrooy in 2006-07 (25) have scored more in their first campaign with Madrid in the competition in the 21st century.
He now has 36 goals in all competitions and is one shy of Ivan Zamorano's record haul of 37 for a Madrid player in their first season at the club. And who better to net his record-clinching goal than Barcelona, who they face in next week's Clasico.
