Official: Frenkie de Jong Extends His Contract with Barcelona Until 2029
Frenkie de Jong will continue to wear the FC Barcelona shirt for many more years. The club has officially announced the Dutch midfielder’s contract extension until June 30, 2029, adding three extra seasons to his stay in Catalonia. The new deal includes a significant salary reduction and reaffirms De Jong’s role as a cornerstone in Hansi Flick’s long-term project.
A restructured contract for stability
Previously tied to the club until 2026 and earning around €23 million per year, De Jong’s high wages had been a topic of debate amid Barcelona’s financial challenges. According to Diario AS, his new salary has been adjusted to align with other key players such as Pedri (€12.5M) and Raphinha (€16.6M), allowing the club to better balance its wage structure.
The midfielder’s new deal also includes a €500 million release clause — €100 million higher than his previous one — symbolizing the club’s unwavering confidence in his importance to the project.
Flick’s trust and the club’s full support
Since his arrival, Hansi Flick has made it clear that De Jong is central to his tactical plans. The German coach personally requested the player’s long-term renewal, convinced that the former Ajax midfielder embodies the principles of Barça’s football philosophy — tactical intelligence, composure, and leadership in midfield.
The signing took place on Wednesday morning at the Spotify Camp Nou offices, with president Joan Laporta, vice president Rafael Yuste, and sporting director Deco present alongside the player.

“The most important thing is to win titles”
After putting pen to paper, De Jong expressed his satisfaction with the extension:
“The most important thing is to win titles. That’s what I want and what Barça wants — that’s why I renewed.”
He also emphasized how valued he feels within the club:
“I feel loved by everyone here — the club, my teammates, and the fans — and that motivates me to keep giving my best.”
A decade in Blaugrana colors
If he fulfills his new deal, De Jong will complete 10 years at Barcelona since joining from Ajax in 2019. What began amid skepticism and high expectations has evolved into a story of growth, loyalty, and leadership.
Now an established figure and a key part of Barça’s identity, Frenkie de Jong remains one of the pillars of the team’s future. With his renewal secured, Barcelona not only strengthens its midfield but also reinforces the stability of its new sporting era under Flick’s command.
