A Long-Term Commitment to His Boyhood Club

Nico Williams officially extended his contract with Athletic Club on Tuesday, securing his stay with the Basque side until June 30, 2035. The deal adds eight more years to his previous agreement and symbolizes his loyalty to the team that shaped him.

“We have very ambitious goals, like the Champions League, and there’s no better place to pursue them than with the club of my life,” said Nico in his first words after the extension, in a statement shared by the Bilbao-based club.

Alongside club president Jon Uriarte, Nico signed the new deal, which includes a release clause over 50% higher than his previous one—reportedly approaching €90 million—effectively silencing persistent rumors linking him with FC Barcelona.

A Family Affair

The signing ceremony also included Athletic’s Director of Football Mikel González, as well as Nico’s mother María Arthuer, who serves as an ambassador for the club’s 125th anniversary, and his brother and team captain Iñaki Williams.

“We’ve always dreamed of this moment,” said Nico. “My brother is a role model to everyone, especially me. I think he’s perfect to be captain, and I can’t wait to see him wear the armband for a long time.”

Nico also took a moment to express his appreciation to the fans. “I want to give back as much as I can. I always receive love and positive messages from supporters in the streets of Bilbao. I’m very proud of this fanbase.”

Mikel González called the extension “fantastic news” and highlighted how important it is for Athletic to retain such elite-level talent. “He’s a world-class player, truly unique. Keeping both Williams brothers together—with Iñaki leading and Nico continuing to shine—is the best news we could have.”
