Nico Williams Reveals Why He Turned Down Barcelona To Stay at Athletic Club
In a transfer window full of rumors and surprising moves, one of the most unexpected twists of the summer starred Nico Williams. The Spanish winger, a top target for FC Barcelona, shocked the football world by renewing his contract with Athletic Club, choosing to stay in Bilbao instead of making a move to the Camp Nou.
The 23-year-old, who enjoyed an outstanding season with 11 goals and 7 assists in 44 matches, decided to extend his deal with San Mamés until 2035, reaffirming his loyalty to the club that raised him from a young age.
“I want to make history here”
In an interview with Athletic Club’s official media, Nico Williams explained why he turned down Barcelona, who had courted him for weeks. “We have big goals ahead, like playing in the Champions League. And there’s no better way to do it than with the club of my life,” said the Spanish international. Qualifying for the upcoming Champions League campaign was a key factor in his decision.

His emotional connection to the club — and to his brother Iñaki Williams, captain of the team coached by Ernesto Valverde — also played a major role. “My brother is an example for everyone, especially for me. He’s the ideal leader for this team,” added Nico, who made his first-team debut in the 2020–2021 season.
Although his potential departure had sparked anger among some fans — even leading to the vandalizing of a mural featuring his image — the winger holds no grudge. On the contrary, he expressed his gratitude: “I want to give back to the fans everything they’ve given me. They’ve always shown me a lot of love, and I’m proud to have their support.”
While FC Barcelona will now have to look elsewhere to bolster their attack, Nico Williams continues his journey in Bilbao with the goal of making history and becoming a club legend. His renewal is not just a sporting commitment — it’s a powerful show of loyalty in today’s ever-changing football world.
