Mourinho Looks for Solutions in Defense
Real Madrid have yet to begin their LaLiga campaign, but José Mourinho already has an important problem to solve. Injuries have once again hit the heart of the defense, and Los Blancos will enter the start of the season with only three first-team center backs available.
Éder Militão and Raúl Asencio are sidelined, leaving Dean Huijsen, Antonio Rüdiger and Ibrahima Konaté as the main options for the opening matches.
The good news for Mourinho can be found within the club.
Preseason has allowed Joan Martínez and Mario Rivas to take an important step forward, and both academy defenders could become valuable solutions while the team waits for its injured players to return.
Militão and Asencio Are the Major Concerns
Militão’s situation requires patience from Real Madrid.
The Brazilian continues to recover from the left hamstring injury he suffered toward the end of last season and is still following an individual training program at Valdebebas.
Considering the physical problems he has endured over the past few years, the club does not want to rush his return. The priority is to have him fully recovered before putting him back into a high-intensity situation.
Asencio’s injury has also significantly reduced Mourinho’s options. The defender suffered a tear in his right rectus femoris during preseason and could remain sidelined until mid-September.
That leaves the Portuguese coach with virtually no margin for another injury at center back.
Huijsen, Rüdiger and Konaté Take Charge
With two defenders unavailable, Huijsen, Rüdiger and Konaté will immediately have to take on greater responsibility.
Konaté joined training on August 10 and will have little time to reach peak condition before the start of LaLiga. The friendly against Schalke 04 will be particularly important for the Frenchman to get minutes and build match fitness.
Huijsen, meanwhile, suffered a minor muscle issue during preseason, although he is coming off a campaign in which he made 40 appearances and appears to be one of the leading candidates for a major role from the start.
Rüdiger provides something essential at this moment: experience.
The German also dealt with physical problems last season, but he has already played 45 minutes against Ferencváros and later started against Deportivo La Coruña.
If all three are available, Mourinho has a competitive defense.
The problem is what comes behind them.

The Academy Steps Up at the Perfect Time
This is where Joan Martínez and Mario Rivas could take advantage of their opportunity.
Both academy center backs have received significant minutes during preseason, allowing Mourinho to evaluate them directly in demanding situations.
Joan remains one of the biggest defensive prospects to emerge from La Fábrica. His development has generated major expectations at Valdebebas, and his performances during the summer have strengthened the possibility of seeing him increasingly involved with the first team.
Mario Rivas has not been left behind either.
The defender even scored against Ferencváros, finishing a cross from Alexis Ciria, while also receiving opportunities as a starter during the opening preseason matches.
Mourinho has pushed both youngsters and identified areas they still need to improve. However, under the current circumstances, one of them could end up taking the fourth center-back spot in the squad for the start of the season.
Mourinho Has a Problem Before the Opener
The situation is far from ideal.
Real Madrid have enough quality among their available center backs, but virtually no depth while Militão and Asencio remain sidelined.
Another injury, a suspension or any additional physical problem could further complicate the Portuguese coach’s plans.
The opening match against Espanyol will provide the first test, and Mourinho will have to decide how to organize a defense entering the season with limited options.
However, preseason has also provided an answer he may not have expected to find so soon.
When injuries began to pile up, La Fábrica responded.
And now Joan Martínez and Mario Rivas could go from being two youngsters under evaluation during the summer to becoming genuine solutions for Real Madrid.
