Match in Miami Between Villarreal and FC Barcelona Sparks Opinions: “It’s an Abomination”
War erupts over Villarreal-Barça in Miami: Real Madrid, players, and executives rebel against Javier Tebas. The controversy is unstoppable.
The spark that ignited the controversy
The announcement that the Villarreal–Barcelona match on matchday 17 will be played on December 20 in Miami sparked outrage in Spanish soccer.
The decision, endorsed by the RFEF and promoted by Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, has been branded an “aberration” and “disrespectful” by many.
Real Madrid, the first to speak out
Real Madrid issued a statement denouncing the measure as a violation of the principle of territorial reciprocity, granting an unfair sporting advantage.
It also accused LaLiga of failing to consult or inform the clubs involved and called on FIFA, UEFA, and the CSD to halt the plan.
Similarly, opinions were expressed by Unai Simón, Pablo Martínez, and David Soria, who showed their disagreement and denounced it as a lack of respect for Spanish soccer.
Ángel Torres joins in with strong criticism
Getafe president Ángel Torres described the idea as an “abomination” and accused LaLiga of distorting the competition. His stance is in line with that of other leaders who warn that this is not a matter of business, but of sporting respect.
The project is already on UEFA's table and, if approved, could set a precedent for other matches.
However, opposition is so widespread that the viability of Villarreal–Barça in Miami hangs in the balance.
