Making His Barcelona Debut Wasn't Lionel Messi's First Dream

  • Lionel Messi changed Barcelona's history at just 17, but before becoming a football legend, he had a very different dream. The Argentine himself revealed what he truly wanted as a child.

The Day Messi Began Changing Barcelona's History

On October 16, 2004, football began writing one of its most remarkable chapters. A 17-year-old Argentine named Lionel Messi stepped onto the pitch as a substitute for Deco, making his official first-team debut for Barcelona.

At the time, Frank Rijkaard was putting his faith in a young player whose life had changed dramatically four years earlier, when he moved to Spain at just 13.

What initially seemed like an uncertain new adventure would eventually become one of the greatest success stories in football history.

But there is one detail that makes that historic debut even more remarkable: playing for Barcelona had never been Messi's original childhood dream.

The Napkin That Changed Messi's Destiny Forever

Messi's Barcelona story began long before his debut, with an agreement that would eventually become one of football's most famous documents.

On December 14, 2000, Carles Rexach, Barcelona's sporting director at the time, wrote a commitment to sign the young Argentine on a napkin.

The document read:

"In Barcelona, on December 14, 2000, and in the presence of Mr. Minguella and Mr. Horacio, Carles Rexach, sporting director of FC Barcelona, agrees, under his responsibility and independently of any dissenting opinion, to sign the player Lionel Messi, provided the agreed amounts are respected."

That napkin, which marked a defining moment in Messi's future, would eventually sell at auction for $965,000.

Newell's Old Boys: Lionel Messi's Original Childhood Dream

Before becoming a Barcelona icon, Messi dreamed of something much closer to home: making his professional debut for Newell's Old Boys, the Argentine club where his football journey began.

Like so many young fans who grow up supporting their hometown team, Messi imagined the day he would finally step onto the pitch wearing the first-team shirt.

He revealed that childhood ambition in an interview with ESPN:

"I always say that my childhood dream was to play for Newell's first team. I used to go to the stadium, I played there, and I dreamed of becoming a professional in the first division."

But his life took an unexpected turn when he was just 13.

"Then my life changed completely because I left at 13, made my debut for Barcelona, and everything that happened afterward. It's something I never could have imagined, not even in my wildest dreams. I experienced things far greater than anything I could have dreamed of," Messi recalled.

The Numbers That Made Messi a Barcelona Legend

What began with a few minutes on the pitch on October 16, 2004, eventually developed into a historic era for the Catalan club.

Messi made 778 official appearances for Barcelona and scored 672 goals, numbers that illustrate the scale of his legacy.

He also won 10 LaLiga titles and four Champions League trophies, establishing himself as one of the most influential players in Barcelona's history.

The young boy who dreamed of playing for Newell's ultimately left an unforgettable mark at Barcelona, the club that changed his destiny when he was still a teenager.
