Kylian Mbappé Absent From Arbeloa’s First Training Session as Real Madrid Head Coach
Amid the transition following Xabi Alonso’s dismissal, Kylian Mbappé did not take part in Álvaro Arbeloa’s first training session in charge, drawing attention at Valdebebas ahead of the Copa del Rey opener.
Real Madrid began a new chapter on Tuesday with Álvaro Arbeloa leading the first team, just hours after Xabi Alonso was relieved of his duties following the defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final. The opening session of the new era, however, featured a notable absence: Kylian Mbappé was not involved in the workout.
The session at Valdebebas focused on preparing for Wednesday’s Copa del Rey clash against Albacete, a match expected to include several rotations. Even so, Mbappé’s absence quickly became a talking point given his influence on the team and the timing of the coaching change.
Physical Rest and Sporting Context
Sources close to Real Madrid indicate that Mbappé’s absence is primarily linked to fitness management. The forward has been dealing with knee discomfort and started the Spanish Super Cup final on the bench, only entering in the second half without being able to alter the outcome.
With a demanding schedule ahead, the coaching staff opted to grant the World Cup winner additional rest. Given the opposition and the stage of the competition, Mbappé’s involvement against Albacete was never considered essential, even if he were fully fit.
Mbappé’s Message After Alonso’s Exit
Beyond the physical aspect, Mbappé drew attention for his response to Xabi Alonso’s dismissal. While the French star has not appeared publicly since the managerial change, he did address the situation on social media, thanking Alonso for the trust shown and highlighting what he learned during their brief time together.
The statistics underline that relationship: under Alonso, Mbappé recorded 29 goals and five assists in 25 appearances, although reports also suggested occasional internal friction between player and coach.
The debate intensified after the Super Cup final, when Mbappé faced criticism for a gesture at full time, as Real Madrid players were urged to form a guard of honor for Barcelona. The incident sparked discussion and even prompted comments from Joan Laporta, who called for sportsmanship in defeat.
As Álvaro Arbeloa begins his tenure with a calm and pragmatic approach, Kylian Mbappé’s absence from the first training session does not signal conflict—but it does reflect the delicate transition period at Real Madrid, where every decision and gesture will be closely scrutinized.
