Julián Álvarez Breaks Silence on Barcelona Links and His Future at Atlético Madrid
Julián Álvarez addresses the rumors linking him to Barcelona, but his response leaves the door slightly open for the future.
Julián Steers Clear of Controversy
For months, Julián Álvarez has been mentioned as a possible successor to Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona. However, the current Atlético Madrid star isn’t letting the noise distract him. After the win over Eintracht Frankfurt, the Argentine striker was asked about Barça’s interest and responded calmly:
“I’m very relaxed. People always talk; last year there were plenty of rumors too. But honestly, this is just the beginning. My focus is on improving every day, winning with my teammates here. That’s all I have in mind.”
With those words, the former Manchester City man avoided fueling speculation, though in Argentina reports suggest his camp might be open to a future move to Barcelona.
A Defining Season for the Argentine
Álvarez knows this is a decisive season in his career. He admitted that, while the 2026 World Cup is still some way off, it’s impossible not to think about it. Still, he emphasized that his current priority is performing week after week for Atlético.
The striker left City in search of more playing time, and while he has delivered goals and assists in Simeone’s team, he hasn’t always looked comfortable in the system. At times, he has even shown frustration when substituted or after tactical decisions he didn’t agree with.
Barcelona’s Long-Term Vision
At Barcelona, the board is well aware that a new No. 9 will soon be needed. Lewandowski’s contract runs until 2026, and Álvarez is seen as an ideal heir. Still, club officials believe it’s too early for a final decision. Much will depend on Lewandowski’s performance this season and the club’s financial outlook in the coming months.
For now, Julián continues to downplay the speculation, but his words don’t close the door entirely. In Barcelona, every statement from the Argentine keeps alive the dream of seeing him wear the blaugrana shirt one day.
