Iñaki Williams Slams Barcelona Over Nico Williams Transfer Saga
Iñaki Williams sharply criticized FC Barcelona’s handling of the transfer saga involving his brother Nico, accusing the club of using a harmful media campaign and revealing the personal toll it took on the young winger.
Iñaki Williams, the new captain of Athletic Club, took aim at FC Barcelona for the intense media pressure surrounding his brother Nico Williams, who recently extended his contract with Athletic until 2035. Without mentioning the Catalan club directly, the forward accused them of orchestrating a “media campaign” aimed at luring Nico.
“They launched a media campaign they thought would work,” stated Iñaki, referring to how the rumor mill destabilized Nico’s environment. “Many of the things said were lies. People weren’t fair to my brother this summer.”
The Pressure That Broke the Silence
Nico Williams had been at the center of transfer speculation for months. His release clause—valued at €58 million, rising to €62 million—made him an appealing target for top European clubs. Yet, amid all the noise, he chose to remain with Athletic Club, a decision his older brother praised.
“My brother had options everywhere,” said Iñaki. “But he stayed. He’ll play with his family, friends, and girlfriend close by. That means more than money or trophies.”
The 22-year-old winger had to endure a heavy personal toll. According to Iñaki, Nico’s mural was vandalized twice and someone even smashed a car window. “Those aren’t things people talk about, but they hurt,” he added.
Barcelona Accused of "Tarnishing" the Process
The media frenzy, said Iñaki, created a toxic atmosphere. “The external noise ruined a lot. At Athletic, we go about things quietly. We don’t leak false stories to pressure players.”
He compared Nico’s loyalty to Julen Guerrero, another club icon who turned down multiple offers to remain in Bilbao. “He followed his heart and stayed to build a legacy,” said Iñaki.
He also spoke of the emotional conversations with his brother. “Sometimes he got heated and wanted to respond online. I told him to stay calm and let his actions speak.”
Iñaki Williams, now the first Black captain in the club’s history, also emphasized the importance of representing immigrant communities in Spain. “It’s important for people to see that success doesn’t come from privilege. Nico and I are from a humble family. We’ve worked hard for this.”
